Farms and land in Westmoreland County are attractive to investors, developers and outdoor sportsmen due to its rural location, low labor cost and expected population growth. Westmoreland County land is located in the Coastal region and is adjacent to Northumberland, Richmond County, Essex and King George counties in Virginia and Charles and St. Mary's counties in Maryland. The county is 253 square miles and includes 24 square miles of water and 82 square miles of farmland. It has a population of 17,830. Retail, construction, fishing and agriculture are the prime components of its economy. Farmland encompasses 52,619 acres, and 27% of the acreage is in woodlands. The top private employers include Carry on Trailer Corp., Bevans Oyster Co. and Potomac Supply LLC. Both fishermen and hunters enjoy their respective sports on the Rappahannock River National Refuge. Hunters can bag deer, turkeys, small game and waterfowl. Fishermen can take their pick of a long list of species found in the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers or one of the many creeks. Other attractions are the birthplaces of George Washington, James Monroe and Robert E. Lee. Westmoreland County Public Schools provides K-12 public education.
