Land in Portsmouth draws the attention of investors, developers and businesses looking for unlimited opportunities to expand their financial horizons. Located in the Coastal region of the state in the Hampton Roads area, the city of Portsmouth land covers 46 square miles. Its highly skilled work force, access to major land, sea and air transportation and its historical background make it a unique place to set up shop. The population of 95,684 residents provides the labor needed to staff the military-related job-makers including the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the Naval Medical Center. Other top employers include the Ceres Marine Terminals Inc., International Marine & Industrial Applicators and the Virginia International Terminal. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard produced the CSS Virginia which later was rebuilt to become the Merrimac. It also built the nation’s first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley. The city also is home to the 5th District Coast Guard Command. Tourists visit the Lightship Portsmouth, Naval Shipyard Museum and the Commodore Theater. Charters are available for party boats, water taxis, kayak rentals, and other opportunities to get out on the water. Portsmouth City Schools provides K-12 public education, and Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College offer higher learning.
