Farms and land in Lunenburg County attract developers and sportsmen with its sparsely populated rural appeal, low taxes, low wages and ideal settings for hunting and fishing retreats. Located in the Piedmont, Lunenburg County land in the south-central part of the state is adjacent to Brunswick, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties. The 432-square-mile county has a population of 12,086. Farmland encompasses 72,851 acres, and crops are about 78% of the agricultural sales. About 41% of farmland remains in woodlands that provide opportunities for timber sales. Much of the economic base of the county is provided by farming and timber sales. Most of the top employers are government entities. The affordability of larger tracts of land and farms makes it attractive for hunting camps for personal enjoyment or for leasing opportunities. There is a wide range of game including bears, quail, rabbits and deer. Fishermen, hikers, kayakers, bikers, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the area for get-aways. Fishermen can take advantage of the many creeks and rivers including Nottoway Falls and Meherrin River to land an assortment of species including largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Lunenburg County Public Schools provides K-12 public education.
