Cumberland County land and farms offer investors and developers opportunities to expand or relocate businesses, develop housing projects or find a new home site. The 658-square-mile Cumberland County land is home to 335,000 residents, many originally brought to the area by Pope Army Air Field and Fort Bragg. Cumberland County is bordered by Robeson, Harnett, Moore, Sampson, Hoke and Bladen counties. Although the county has a heavy military presence and its supporting businesses, farming also is part of the local economy. Farmland occupies 66,000 acres, and livestock and poultry account for 73% of agricultural sales. Thirty-four percent of farmland remains as woodlands. Manufacturing includes textiles, brick and concrete products, metal products, power tools and plastics. Walmart Associates Inc. and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Inc. are the largest private companies. Local government and the U.S. Department of Defense are the largest public employers. Hunters take advantage of the deer hunting opportunities on Fort Bragg or on private land. Fishermen cast their lines along the Little and Cape Fear rivers and in area streams and ponds. Visitors to the area enjoy the Airborne and Special Operations Museum and the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum. Cumberland County Schools provides K-12 public education. Fayetteville State University, Methodist University and Fayetteville Technical Community College offer higher education.
