Sampson County Land and Farms

Sampson County land and farm appeals to investors, developers, business owners and sportsmen due, in part, to its great accessibility to major transportation routes including I-40 running east and west and I-95 that goes north and south. It also has low wages and a skilled workforce. It is one of the largest counties in the state with 962 square miles and has a population of 63,626. Land in Sampson County is located in the Coastal Plain, and it’s just an hour drive to Raleigh and Wilmington. It is adjacent to Johnston, Wayne, Duplin, Pender, Bladen, Cumberland and Harnett counties. The county includes 615,680 acres of which 301,248 is farmland. Agriculture and manufacturing form its economic base. Eighty-four percent of agricultural sales are for livestock and poultry. Cropland accounts for 70% of the farmland, and 19% remains in woodlands. Sampson County is the state’s largest producer of hay, flue-cured tobacco and turkeys, and the second largest producer of hogs in the state. The top private employers are Smithfield Foods Inc., Prestage Farms Inc., Hog Slat Co. Inc. and Sager Creek Vegetable Co. Three-hundred miles of shoreline provided by the Black and South rivers and many creeks provide great hunting and fishing opportunities whether looking to bag a deer or catch a bass. Public education is provided by Sampson County Schools and Clinton-City Schools. Higher learning is offered at Sampson Community College.
