Just minutes away is the historic Town of Bath, NC,  this area is steeped in the rich history of down east Carolina.

European settlement near the Pamlico River in the 1690s led to the creation of Bath, North Carolina's first town, in 1705. The town's location seemed ideal with easy access to the river and the Atlantic Ocean 50 miles away at Ocracoke Inlet.  Trade in naval stores, furs, and tobacco was important, and Bath became the first port of entry into North Carolina. In 1707, a grist mill and the colony's first shipyard were established in the town. A library sent to St. Thomas Parish in 1701 became the first public library in the colony.  Bath was also the haunt of Edward Teach, better known as the pirate "Blackbeard." An expedition of the British Navy killed him in a naval battle near Ocracoke in 1718. (http://www.nchistoricsites.org/bath/main.htm)

A few miles to the north lies the coastal town of Belhaven, NC, cuddled in the midst of Pantego Creek and Pungo River. Once known as Jack’s Neck, then Bellport, finally the town became known as Belhaven which means “beautiful harbor”. Belhaven is known for its fine old homes, some of which were built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  One can go, by water, eight miles southeast to Pamlico Sound. From there the Outer Banks of North Carolina lay fifteen miles east.

In a normal year, Pungo River and its tributaries and Pamlico Sound and its tributaries, are a sports fisherman’s paradise. There is also an abundance of wildlife in the area including white tail deer, black bear, rabbits, squirrels, quail, swan and most all varieties of ducks and geese. From fishing and hunting, sailing and water sports, the area offers all of this and much, much more. The Atlantic Ocean out of Ocracoke and Oregon Inlets provide a marvelous deep-sea fishing experience. (http://belhavennc.us/)
